History of the Carnival

The Haltwhistle Carnival was started in 1989 by the town twinning committee as part of their celebrations for the french twin town of St Meen le Grand coming over for their visit. After the first Carnival the town twinning committee went to France for a visit. The carnival took a break for a couple of years and didn’t re-appear until 1992.

It was initially a one day event, which over time has evolved into a week long event with various events around the town for all age groups.

It now has its own committee and continues to go from strength to strength.

The first event of the year is held around Easter time when a disco is held to pick the current years Carnival Princess and her Attendants.

Various events are held on the carnival week leading up to the carnival day along with a full day of parade of floats, live music, entertainment, refreshments, fun fair, vintage vehicles and stalls all on carnival day!
